792 km Range, 800V Charging and a Disconnect Unit: Why the All-New 2026 CLA May Be Mercedes-Benz's Most Efficient Car
March 30 2026,
Mercedes-Benz built the VISION EQXX concept to prove that electric efficiency could coexist with luxury. The all-new 2026 CLA brings that technology to production. The CLA 250+ with EQ Technology is rated at up to 792 km of range, making it the most efficient Mercedes-Benz car you can buy in Canada. That range figure is backed by an 800-volt electrical architecture, a two-speed transmission, and a disconnect unit that shuts off the front motor when you don't need it.
The CLA lineup includes three models. The CLA 250 4MATIC uses a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 with mild hybrid drive, producing 221 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and an 8G-DCT dual-clutch transmission. The two electric variants share an 85 kWh battery and 800-volt charging. The 250+ is rear-wheel drive with 268 hp and 247 lb-ft, rated at 694-792 km of range. The 350 4MATIC adds a front motor for all-wheel drive, delivering 349 hp and 380 lb-ft, with a range of 672-771 km. The CLA 250+ can add up to 325 km of range in 10 minutes at a DC fast charger, while the CLA 350 4MATIC can add up to 315 km in the same timeframe.
The 800-Volt System Changes How You Charge
The CLA's 800-volt electrical architecture allows the battery to accept up to 320 kW of DC fast charging. The system uses a silicon carbide (SiC) inverter, which reduces energy loss during charging and improves efficiency when driving.
Charging from 10 to 80% takes 22 minutes at a compatible DC fast charger. AC charging is rated at 9.6 kW, standard for home charging setups. The 800-volt system also supports bidirectional charging - both vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) - so the CLA can send power back to your home or the grid when needed.
How the Two-Speed Transmission Extends Range
The CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4MATIC both use a two-speed transmission on the rear axle. First gear is geared at 11:1 for acceleration. Second gear is geared at 5:1 for highway efficiency. The transmission shifts automatically based on speed and load, keeping the motor operating in its most efficient range at highway speeds, where most EVs lose efficiency.
The two-speed setup is rare in electric vehicles. Most EVs use a single-speed reduction gear because electric motors deliver full torque from zero rpm. Mercedes-Benz added the second gear specifically to reduce energy consumption at sustained highway speeds, which is where the CLA's 792 km range figure comes from.
The Disconnect Unit and Why It Matters for the 350 4MATIC
The CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology uses dual permanently excited synchronous motors - one on the rear axle, one on the front. The front motor is equipped with a disconnect unit, a mechanical clutch that physically separates the motor from the drivetrain when all-wheel drive isn't needed. This eliminates drag from the front motor and improves efficiency in rear-wheel-drive mode.
The disconnect unit engages automatically when the system detects low traction or when you select a drive mode that prioritizes performance. The rest of the time, the CLA 350 4MATIC operates as a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, which is why its range (672-771 km) is only slightly lower than the rear-drive-only CLA 250+.
What the Drag Coefficient Actually Does
The CLA's coefficient of drag starts at 0.25, among the lowest of any production car. Drag coefficient measures how easily air flows around the vehicle - lower numbers mean less resistance and less energy required to maintain highway speeds. Most compact sedans have a drag coefficient around 0.28-0.30.
Mercedes-Benz achieved this through active aerodynamics, a smooth underbody, and a roofline that tapers toward the rear. At 100 km/h, the CLA uses less energy to overcome wind resistance than most vehicles in its class, which directly extends range.
The Mild Hybrid CLA 250 4MATIC
The CLA 250 4MATIC uses a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 with a 48-volt mild hybrid system producing 221 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The mild hybrid system uses a belt-driven starter-generator that can add up to 13 hp and 111 lb-ft of torque during acceleration, and allows the engine to coast with the ignition off at highway speeds to save fuel.
Fuel economy is rated at 9.3 L/100 km city and 6.9 L/100 km highway. The 8G-DCT dual-clutch transmission offers three drive modes - ECO, Comfort, and Sport. The CLA 250 4MATIC accelerates from 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds.
The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system can send up to 50% of the engine's torque to the rear wheels when traction is low, monitoring wheel slip continuously and adjusting torque distribution automatically.

Safety and Technology
The CLA includes a centre airbag, the first time this feature has appeared in this vehicle class. The centre airbag deploys between the front seats during a side impact to reduce the risk of occupant-to-occupant contact.
The multi-stage high-voltage protection system monitors the battery and electrical components continuously. If the system detects a fault or impact, it isolates the high-voltage battery and cuts power to the drive motors. STEER CONTROL applies a corrective force to the steering wheel if the system detects handling instability.
The MBUX voice interface responds to natural language commands for climate settings, navigation, and audio. The system includes a dashcam that records video to a USB flash drive. KEYLESS-GO allows you to unlock the doors and start the engine without removing the SmartKey from your pocket. THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control offers separate temperature settings for driver and front passenger, with a dust and pollen filter that blocks particles as small as 5 micrometres.
Interior and Cargo
The CLA seats five passengers. Front headroom is 1,023 mm, with 1,062 mm of legroom and 1,400 mm of shoulder room. Rear headroom is 908 mm, with 861 mm of legroom and 1,372 mm of shoulder room. Cargo capacity is 440 litres.
The panoramic sunroof is standard and features a power interior shade. Leather upholstery is standard, with hand-fitted seat inserts, side bolsters, and head restraints.
The CLA Is Built for Efficiency, Not Compromise
The 2026 CLA features an 800-volt charging, a two-speed transmission, and a disconnect unit that shuts off the front motor when you don't need it. The 792 km range rating is backed by technology that Mercedes-Benz developed for the VISION EQXX and brought to production.
